William Groeneveld is 20 years old and is from Sommelsdijk. He works as a mechanical engineer at Flikweert Vision and is also studying mechanical engineering part-time at Avans. His technical career started as an intern during his mbo study Mechanical Engineering level 4. After his internship, he was able to stay on and grew within the company. The agricultural sector attracted him from an early age, partly because of his background on a mixed agricultural farm.
Bespoke technology
As a mechanical engineer, William is involved in devising and working out technical solutions that do not yet exist. “No standard solutions, but truly custom-made solutions. I think along with the customer and design how our machine fits best in their line. Whether that's an existing or a completely new setup.” In doing so, the customer's interests are always at the forefront. He also works on the development of new parts and machines. Every project is different, and it is precisely this variety that makes the work interesting for him.
From drawing to turning line
The most enjoyable part of his job? “That you draw something out, see it being built in the workshop, and then see it turn at the customer's premises, often fitting in one go. That remains cool to see.” Occasionally, he also supports the fitters on site if there are any questions during construction.

Strong guidance and room to learn
What William appreciates is the personal support, both in practice and around his studies. “If I get stuck in something or have questions, there are always colleagues willing to help me. You notice that commitment everywhere. People think along with me and I get the space to keep developing.” He is proud of how the company is growing and becoming more professional. “We went from a shack to new premises. Steps like that give energy and motivation.”
Working with pleasure
With a young and close-knit team, the atmosphere on the shop floor is friendly and sociable. “We work hard, but there is also room for a joke or a lark in between. That makes it light-hearted and fun.” Besides work, there is regular scope for team outings and activities. “Sometimes we play football after working hours or have a beer together. It just feels like working with friends.”
