Engineering Department
Where engineering is today a team of nearly ten colleagues, it started small. With Stefan, the foundation was laid, which quickly grew into a team of three. The department has since grown into an important part of Flikweert Vision, where innovation and production come together.
With a growing number of customer setups and machines, it became increasingly important to bring structure. Engineering evolved from a compact setup to a structured department with clear working methods, roles, and responsibilities.
From concept to implementable solution
Engineering forms the link between idea and realisation. Where Sales Engineering creates an initial draft for a customer setup, the engineering team develops this into manufacturable, detailed drawings. These form the basis for work preparation and production. Within the team, we work on both machine development and optimisation, as well as developing customer setups into manufacturable solutions. The tasks overlap and are handled by the entire team.
Structure brings calm and overview
The growth of the department brought new challenges. Where previously a lot was coordinated verbally, there is now an increasing reliance on fixed processes and data structures. Jira is used as a planning and project tool. This provides insight into the progress and any bottlenecks within projects, even when multiple departments are involved. “By introducing more structure, we can plan better and react faster,” says Arend.
This way of working provides a better overview, less noise, and a more efficient process. This brings calm to the team and makes the work more manageable.
“What characterises us is the drive to improve,” says Arend. “Everyone picks that up themselves”.”
Continuous improvement
A recent example is the further development of the QualityGrader. Based on customer feedback and operational data, the machine has been further optimised. This has reduced the likelihood of blockages and made the machine more accessible for servicing and maintenance. This directly contributes to its reliability in practice.
Driven to move forward
What characterises the engineering team is the drive for continuous improvement.
“What characterises us is the drive to improve,” says Arend. “Everyone takes that on board themselves.” This mentality ensures that innovation and optimisation are naturally part of daily work. Improvements don't just arise from large projects, but also from the small steps taken every day.
Growth and development within the team
The growth of the department also offers opportunities for development. Colleagues are given the space to grow and further specialise within their field. Within the team, there are several colleagues who combine their studies with work. Additionally, there is regular scope for interns, which ensures that new knowledge and energy continuously flow into the department. “You are given the space here to learn and develop yourself,” says Ralph. “As a result, you keep growing, both technically and personally.”
An example of this is progression within the team to a role as team lead mechanical engineering. This shows that investment is made not only in technology, but also in the development of people.
What this growth says about Flikweert Vision
The development of the engineering department shows how Flikweert Vision is further professionalising. With a growing team and increasingly complex projects, structure has become essential.
By investing in processes, collaboration, and knowledge, space is created to continue innovating. This way, engineering continues to contribute to what makes Flikweert Vision strong: smart solutions that work in practice and are continuously improved.
