Jarno Korstanje
Jarno Korstanje is 25 years old and lives in Driewegen. He studied ICT at HZ University of Applied Sciences in Middelburg and then obtained a Master's degree in Computer Vision and Data Science at NHL Stenden in Leeuwarden. At Flikweert Vision, he works as a Computer Vision Engineer.
From curiosity to Flikweert Vision
Between his hbo and masters, Jarno was exploring companies that appealed to him in terms of content. “Through LinkedIn, I came across Flikweert Vision. I had been following the page for some time and kept checking what was happening. Halfway through my master's I contacted them. After the summer, I started.” What immediately appealed to him was the practical application of technology. “We don't work here on abstract models that only exist on a computer. Everything we develop has to work reliably in practice every day. You see the result reflected in the machines.”
Where technology and product come together
As a Computer Vision Engineer, Jarno works on maintaining and improving the models that determine sorting quality. He does this in close cooperation with product specialists. “Feedback from customers is very important in this. We use this to hone our domain knowledge and improve the datasets behind the models.” He also works on technical optimisations. Think of better selection of images and extra check steps on models. “This way, we can still make improvements with less data. That helps to remain consistent and reliable towards customers.” What he particularly likes is the combination of technology and product knowledge. “The two really come together here. You immediately see what your work does to the sorting quality.”
Structure, growth and new challenges
When Jarno started, the company was less structured. “Recently, we have made many strides in knowledge sharing and collaboration. That makes the work more manageable.” A major challenge was taking over and further developing existing structures. “How do we ensure continuity? And how do we transfer knowledge properly? These are issues we are actively working on.” He is also working on new projects, such as sorting washed potatoes. “That was a completely new project. We have made great strides in that.”
Everything we develop needs to work reliably in practice every day. You see the result in the machines.
Open culture and development
What appeals to Jarno about Flikweert Vision is the young team and the open communication. “There is room for own ideas and initiative.” Development is also a priority. “For example, we attend symposia on computer vision. In addition, there is room to explore new techniques and grow in collaboration.”
Contributing to the vision
Jarno sees his role as essential to Flikweert Vision's vision. “If we want to be a leader, so must our models. Product assessment directly determines how well our machines perform.” One project he is proud of focuses on model improvement with less data. “With new techniques and additional control steps, we have achieved great results in this.”
Outside work
In his spare time, Jarno likes to go running, just to keep busy alongside work.
